excerpt from Portolan Map, 2016, 19:00 loop, stop-motion animation

According to old Spanish sailing customs, maps were weighed down with lead so that they could be quickly jettisoned when in danger of falling to the enemy. Here, water slowly lifts a thin graphite copy off a google map showing a ‘phantom’ island (somewhere once charted but does not exist). Much like the reflection in Fluorescence, this imprint of what lies underneath keeps wandering, yet remains anchored, unable to detach.
